The Gibson Marauder remains one of the most distinctive and underrated instruments of the Norlin era, and this 1978 example in rare Ebony finish perfectly captures the model's unique blend of Gibson heritage and Fender-inspired design.

Introduced in the mid-1970s, the Marauder was Gibson's answer to the growing popularity of bolt-on neck guitars. Designed in collaboration with legendary pickup designer Bill Lawrence, the model combined a familiar single-cut body shape with features aimed at players seeking brighter, more versatile tones than a traditional Les Paul could offer. Production ran from 1975 through 1979, with only approximately 7,100 instruments produced, making original Marauders increasingly sought after by collectors and players alike.

This 1978 Marauder features the desirable second-generation pickup blending system. Early Marauders utilized a three-way selector switch, while later examples relocated the blend control between the volume and tone knobs. This guitar represents the transitional version, equipped with the rotary blend potentiometer that replaced the original switch, allowing seamless mixing of the neck and bridge pickups for a surprisingly wide tonal palette.

Every Marauder was fitted with a unique set of Bill Lawrence-designed pickups sealed in clear epoxy. In the neck position sits a proprietary humbucker offering warm, full-bodied tones, while the bridge position houses an angled blade-style single-coil pickup that delivers exceptional clarity, bite, and attack. Together, they create a sound that sits somewhere between classic Gibson thickness and Fender-like sparkle, making the Marauder one of the most versatile guitars of its era.

The Ebony finish is among the rarer factory colors, with only around 460 examples produced in black, compared to nearly 4,800 natural-finish instruments. Its sleek appearance complements the model's aggressive lines, Flying V-inspired headstock, and distinctive white pickguard.

Construction features include a contoured solid body, bolt-on maple neck, maple fingerboard, Schaller-made Harmonica bridge, stop tailpiece, and the unmistakable Norlin-era craftsmanship that has developed a loyal following among vintage guitar enthusiasts. 1978 also marked the peak production year for the Marauder, making instruments from this period representative of the model at its most refined.

While initially overlooked, the Marauder has gained significant appreciation over the years. Notable users and supporters have included Kiss legends Ace Frehley and Paul Stanley, who helped promote the model during its introduction. More recently, players such as Adam Jones and Deryck Whibley have brought renewed attention to the Marauder's unique sound and character.

Tonally, the Marauder excels at everything from clean country and funk rhythms to classic rock crunch. The blend control allows subtle shades between the powerful neck humbucker and the cutting bridge pickup, producing sounds unavailable on most Gibson models of the period.

This particular guitar comes complete with a generic hard case, providing solid protection for transport and storage.
