The Fender Musicmaster Bass Amp is an often overlooked gem from Fender’s 1970s lineup. Originally designed as part of a student package alongside the Musicmaster Bass guitar, this compact combo amp has found a second life among guitarists seeking unique vintage tones.

While it was marketed for bass players, guitarists quickly discovered its warm, gritty breakup and rich midrange. Its design is reminiscent of the Silverface Fender Champ, but with several notable upgrades. Most importantly, the Musicmaster Bass Amp features a 12-inch speaker—larger than the 8-inch speaker found in the Champ. This gives it fuller bass response and a rounder tone overall, making it more versatile across instruments. Additionally, it pushes 12 watts of tube power—double the output of a Champ—making it powerful enough for small gigs, recording sessions, and practice.

Fender produced the Musicmaster Bass Amp from 1970 to 1980 in a Silverface version, and from 1980 to 1983 with a Blackface aesthetic.

The earliest models, known as the CFA7010 version, were equipped with a 6AQ5 tube circuit, which was later replaced by the more common 6V6 circuit.

This particular unit is a rare early example from late 1977 with some parts from 1975 and it is a late version with the 6AQ5 circuit

Specs:

  • Circuit: 6AQ5A version
  • Output: 12 watts
  • Transformers: Original Schumacher
  • Speaker: 12-inch Fender original speaker
  • Voltage: original 220v version

Praised by guitarists like Noel Gallagher (Oasis) and Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys), the Musicmaster Bass Amp remains a cult favorite for its simplicity, character, and distinctive tone.
