Few bass guitars are as instantly recognizable—or as sonically unique—as the Rickenbacker 4001 bass. With its striking looks, bright tone, and storied legacy in rock music, the 4001 has become an enduring icon since its introduction in the early 1960s. The 1973 Rickenbacker 4001 featured here, finished in a rare and beautifully aged natural (Mapleglo) finish, is a standout example of this classic instrument in nearly original condition.
The Rickenbacker 4001 was first introduced in 1961 as an upscale sibling to the 4000 model. Designed with a neck-through-body construction, dual single-coil pickups, and the iconic “cresting wave” body shape, the 4001 offered enhanced sustain and definition that made it a favorite for progressive and hard rock bassists throughout the '70s and beyond.
By the early 1970s, Rickenbacker had begun making subtle refinements to the model. The 1973 version is particularly prized among collectors and players for its distinctive features: triangle (sharkfin) inlays, single layer white binding, new hi-gain neck pickup replacing the toaster one.and split tailpiece/bridge unit, all of which are present on this bass. The natural finish was a less common option compared to Jetglo or Fireglo, adding to the instrument’s uniqueness.
This 1973 Rickenbacker 4001 is in excellent playing condition and visually striking with its natural Mapleglo finish, showcasing the maple grain beneath a light amber patina. The finish has aged gracefully, with a mild golden hue that enhances the vintage aesthetic. All original hardware is intact, with one notable exception: the original tuners have been replaced with high-quality Schaller tuners, a common and functional upgrade that improves tuning stability while maintaining a classic look.
Still has the shop sticker where it has been bought new in Germany.
The bass retains its original Rickenbacker "toaster" neck pickup and horseshoe-style bridge pickup, delivering the bright, ringing tones that have defined generations of Rickenbacker players. The electronics remain untouched, with original pots, wiring, and stereo Rick-O-Sound output intact. The neck is straight and fast, with comfortable low action and no structural issues.
This 1973 Rickenbacker 4001 in natural finish is a superb example of one of the most influential bass guitars ever made. With its elegant look, distinctive tone, and mostly original condition—aside from the practical tuner upgrade—it offers a perfect mix of vintage authenticity and modern reliability. For collectors, enthusiasts, or gigging players seeking that unmistakable Rickenbacker sound, this bass delivers history, performance, and style in equal measure.
