Introduced in 1961 as a forward-thinking redesign of the original Les Paul Junior, the Gibson Les Paul "SG" Junior marked a significant turning point in Gibson’s solid-body lineup. Departing from the single-cutaway Les Paul shape, the new SG (“Solid Guitar”) design featured a thinner, lighter mahogany body with sharply pointed double cutaways, offering players unprecedented access to the upper frets. Although early examples still carried the Les Paul name, this was dropped by 1963, firmly establishing the SG as its own identity—one that would go on to define an era of rock music.
By 1966, the SG Junior had matured into one of the purest expressions of Gibson’s design philosophy: simplicity, playability, and tone. Free from unnecessary ornamentation, it was built as a straightforward, working musician’s instrument—yet it delivered a sound and feel that rivaled far more complex guitars. Its lightweight construction makes it exceptionally comfortable to play, whether standing on stage or sitting in the studio, while its resonant mahogany body provides warmth and sustain in equal measure.
At the heart of this instrument is its original single bridge-position P-90 pickup. Known for its raw, articulate voice, the P-90 delivers a powerful midrange bite with plenty of clarity and dynamic response. From snarling overdrive to warm, expressive clean tones, it reacts beautifully to a player’s touch and volume control, making it incredibly versatile despite its minimalist configuration. This is the kind of pickup that defines the SG Junior’s reputation as a true rock ‘n’ roll machine.
The guitar retains its classic wraparound tailpiece, a key element of the Junior’s design that enhances resonance and sustain by maximizing string energy transfer directly into the body. Combined with a vibrola tremolo, this results in an instrument that feels immediate and alive in the hands—responsive, direct, and inspiring.
This particular example remains original, with untouched soldering, preserving its authenticity and vintage integrity. It has benefited from an old neck reset, which significantly enhances playability, offering a low and comfortable action across the fretboard without sacrificing tone. This makes it not only a collectible piece but also an outstanding player’s instrument ready for regular use. The finish is also original, with a few old touch-ups that were carefully applied over minor dings.
Additionally, the guitar bears a “2” stamped beneath the serial number, indicating it left the factory as a “second.” At Gibson, this designation was typically applied to instruments with minor cosmetic imperfections that did not meet strict aesthetic standards. Importantly, this has no effect on sound, feel, or structural integrity—if anything, it adds a unique layer of character and history to the instrument.
The guitar comes housed in a more recent Gibson case, providing reliable protection for transport and storage.
With its rich history, unmistakable tone, and effortless playability, this 1966 SG Junior is everything a vintage guitar should be: honest, resonant, and full of attitude. Plug it in, and you’re instantly connected to the roots of classic rock. Instruments like this don’t stay available for long—don’t miss the opportunity to make it yours.
