Introduced in 1956 as a student model, the Musicmaster was part of Fender Musical Instruments Corporation’s effort to provide an affordable, high-quality instrument for beginners without compromising craftsmanship.
By the mid-1960s, the model had evolved into the Musicmaster II, featuring a larger body shape shared with the Duo-Sonic and Mustang, and a 22.5" or 24" scale length. This one being a 24’’ scale model.
Despite its “student” label, the Musicmaster II has earned lasting respect for its simplicity, tone, and undeniable vintage character. Many professional players have embraced these guitars for their raw single-pickup punch and comfortable feel.
This particular example dates to late 1965, with the neck clearly stamped 8OCT65B. The electronics are equally correct, featuring original CTS pots dated 1965 (137 6518), confirming the integrity and untouched nature of the instrument. Everything on this guitar is original — from the finish and hardware to the electronics and plastics — making it a true collector-grade piece.
The body is finished in vibrant Dakota Red, a color that has aged beautifully over the decades. The lacquer shows natural vintage patina, adding depth and authenticity without detracting from its striking appearance. Paired with a white pickguard, the red finish delivers the quintessential mid-’60s Fender aesthetic.
One of the standout features of this guitar is its slab fretboard — often referred to as a “slab board.” which was not available anymore on Stratocaster, Telecaster, Jazzmaster, Jaguar at that time.
Even more impressive is the dramatic and highly figured “crazy zebra” grain pattern, giving the fingerboard a bold, striped appearance rarely seen. It’s not only visually stunning but also a hallmark of mid-’60s rosewood character. The neck profile is comfortable and classic Fender, offering smooth playability across the board.
The single original pickup delivers everything you would expect from a mid-’60s Fender: clear highs, woody mids, and a focused low end with excellent dynamic response. The simplicity of the single volume and tone controls allows the natural voice of the instrument to shine.
Included is the original 1965 Fender hard case, completing this exceptionally well-preserved vintage package.
An all-original, custom color 1965 Fender Musicmaster II with matching dates, slab board “zebra” fretboard, and original case is becoming increasingly difficult to find. Whether you are a collector, investor, or player seeking authentic vintage Fender tone and vibe, this Dakota Red Musicmaster II is a rare opportunity.
