This one-owner 1964 Fender Stratocaster is a rare authentic piece of Fender history, originally purchased new at Theo Parys’ shop in Brussels, Belgium—one of the most important musical instrument retailers in the country during the golden age of electric guitars.
The story begins with Camille Parys, an accomplished accordion maker and respected musical instrument retailer. In the mid-1950s, Camille transferred ownership of the shop to his youngest son Theo Parys, while asking his elder daughter Flore to work alongside him. During this period, the business operated under the name Camille Parys and Sons, before becoming simply Theo Parys.
However, Theo and Flore proved unable to work together peacefully. In 1962/63, Flore left the family business and opened her own shop, Parys Flore, on the same side of the street just a few blocks away. From that point on, brother and sister never spoke to each other again. Ironically, this split resulted in the creation of two of Brussels’ most influential music stores, alongside Persy, forming the city’s premier destinations for musicians at the time.
Purchasing a Fender Stratocaster from Theo Parys in 1964 meant buying from the very heart of Europe’s emerging electric guitar culture.
What truly sets this Stratocaster apart is its exceptional level of originality combined with full disclosure. The body was refinished in Fiesta Red in 1966. The finish is not factory original, but it is acceptable, period-correct in color, and has aged naturally over time.
Importantly, the neck retains its original factory finish, and the guitar remains otherwise highly original. All electronics are untouched, including the original pots, wiring, and pickups. The pickup set consists of one black-bottom pickup dated July 1964 and two original grey-bottom pickups, representing a correct mid-1960s transitional configuration.
The frets are original, showing honest wear. The guitar weighs 3.3 kg, making it a comfortable and resonant example.
The L-series serial number places this instrument firmly in the pre-CBS transitional era, widely valued for its build quality, materials, and tone.
The Fiesta Red refinish, applied in 1966, presents well visually and has developed a genuine vintage patina. While clearly not a factory or professional refin, it remains historically appropriate and gives the guitar a bold early-’60s custom-color appearance that many players appreciate.
This Stratocaster delivers everything expected from a strong mid-’60s example: good ouput power and blance. The neck has that unmistakable early-’60s Fender feel—comfortable, responsive, and lively in the hands.
This 1964 Fender Stratocaster is more than just an instrument—it’s a preserved chapter of European and Fender history. With its one-owner provenance, documented 1966 Fiesta Red refinish, original neck finish, untouched electronics, L-series serial number, and purchase from the legendary Theo Parys shop in Brussels, it offers a rare combination of story, honesty, and vintage Fender character.
