The Höfner 182 bass was introduced in 1961/62 as part of Höfner's initiative to expand its range of solid-body instruments, which were gaining popularity at the time. This model stands apart from the more renowned Höfner violin bass, which is a hollow-body instrument.
The 182 can be regarded as Höfner's equivalent of the Fender Precision Bass, while the Höfner 185 occupied a position similar to that of the Fender Jazz Bass in the company's solid-body bass lineup.
The Höfner 182 boasts a simple yet effective design, featuring a double-cutaway body that allows easier access to the higher frets. Typically made from solid wood such as maple, the body contributes to its robust tone. The neck is bolted on, a common construction technique for solid-body basses of that era.
This bass is equipped with the distinctive Höfner Diamond pickups, and the pickups and electronics are otherwise identical to those found on the Höfner violin bass model.
Although the Höfner 182 did not achieve the iconic status of the violin bass, it found a niche among musicians who valued its solid construction and dependable performance. It was especially popular in Europe, where Höfner instruments were more widely available and appreciated for their craftsmanship.
This particular Höfner 182 is in excellent condition, having remained with a single family until today, when it was sold to us. As is often the case with vintage instruments, the pickups required rewinding, which has recently been completed. One volume potentiometer has been replaced; the remaining original pot is dated 1962, further supporting the instrument's early production period.
This Höfner 182 bass comes with its original case.
One small historical note: the comparison to the Precision Bass and Jazz Bass is best understood in terms of market position and pickup/layout philosophy rather than being direct copies of those Fender models. The wording above reflects that nuance.
