The Danelectro 3412 bass is one of the early bass models introduced by the company in the late 1950s, a time when electric basses were still a relatively new concept. Designed for musicians seeking affordable, reliable, and distinctive instruments, the 3412 Bass was a notable entry in Danelectro’s lineup.

The 3412 Bass featured a body constructed from masonite and plywood, making it both lightweight and durable. Its neck, made of poplar wood and often reinforced with aluminum, provided stability. Although it has a short 15-fret neck, the strings extend to the bottom of the body, giving it a scale length closer to that of a full-sized bass.

A standout feature of the 3412 Bass, and many other Danelectro instruments, is the use of “lipstick” tube pickups. Originally crafted from surplus lipstick tubes, these pickups offered a distinctive, clear, and twangy tone, setting them apart from the warmer tones of other basses of the time. The bass is equipped with a single pickup and a three-position switch coupled with a tone knob, allowing for a range of sound possibilities.

Over the years, the 3412 Bass has become a sought-after collector’s item, admired for its vintage charm and unique sound. Its design elements, including the lipstick pickups and lightweight construction, have influenced modern reissues and other bass designs by Danelectro and other manufacturers.

This particular example was previously part of Simon Casier’s collection from the band Balthazar before being acquired by us.
