The Fender Harvard 5F10 is one of the hidden gems in Fender’s vintage amplifier lineup — a compact, no-frills combo that punches well above its weight in tone, clarity, and vintage mojo.

This particular example, serial number H03140, dates from early 1960 and represents one of the final iterations of the model before its discontinuation in 1961. With original transformers, period-correct components, and an expert re-tweed job, it’s a rare opportunity to own a beautifully preserved piece of Fender history — one closely associated with the iconic tone of Steve Cropper.

The Harvard amp was produced by Fender from 1956 to 1961 and sits stylistically between the student-model Champ and the larger, more powerful Deluxe. The 5F10 circuit, introduced in the mid-'50s, offers around 10 watts of output through a single 6V6 power tube, yielding surprisingly rich harmonic content and musical breakup at moderate volumes. Unlike the simpler Champ, the Harvard includes a phase inverter, giving it more headroom and a fuller, more dimensional sound — ideal for blues, soul, and early rock tones.

This 1960 model hails from the final chapter of Harvard production. Though often overlooked at the time in favor of larger amps, the Harvard has since earned cult status for its balance of touch-sensitive response and smooth overdrive — a tone famously captured in Steve Cropper’s recordings with Booker T. & the M.G.’s and countless Stax hits.

This Fender Harvard 5F10 remains in excellent working order, with original transformers and vintage-correct components carefully preserved. Key details include:

  • Power transformer: Triad 66079
  • Output transformer: Schumacher 606949 (49th week of 1959)
  • Potentiometers: CTS 137952 (52nd week of 1959)
  • Chassis stamp: JD (April 1960)
  • Assembly inspector: Signature tape from Lupe Lopez, one of Fender’s most respected amp builders

The amp has been professionally re-tweeded, and the cabinet covering has been aged to blend seamlessly with the amp’s vintage character. It houses a recent Jensen C10Q 10-inch speaker, a modern choice that maintains period-authentic tone while offering reliability and durability for regular use.

Only minimal updates have been made to maintain the amp’s usability and tonal integrity:

  • The tweed covering has been replaced and tastefully aged to reflect its original aesthetic.
  • A recent Jensen C10Q speaker was installed for consistent performance while preserving vintage character.
  • The amplifier retains its original 110V power setup, ideal for purists or studio use with a step-down transformer where needed.
