The ES-225TD ("Thinline, Double pickup") was introduced in 1956 and represented one of Gibson's early efforts to combine a thinline hollowbody design with the versatility of two P-90 pickups. Built with a fully hollow laminated maple body and a Florentine cutaway, the ES-225TD offered players the resonance of an archtop with the comfort of a slimmer body profile. It was discontinued in 1959, making that year’s models the final—and arguably most refined—examples of the line.
The 1959 production year also coincided with one of Gibson’s most revered periods, with innovations and quality that still captivate collectors today. By this time, the model had matured with improvements in build consistency and cosmetic touches, including the stunning sunburst finish seen on this guitar.
Guitar Overview
This 1959 ES-225TD is in very good condition, showing light wear that speaks to decades of careful use rather than abuse. The sunburst finish retains much of its original vibrancy, gracefully aged but not heavily checked or faded. The fully hollow maple body delivers the characteristic warmth and airy tone ES guitars are known for, complemented by the clear, punchy response of its dual P-90 pickups.
Though mostly original, this example features reproduction knobs, an often-replaced part due to normal wear or loss over the years. Inside, one of the potentiometers is dated 1968, indicating a likely service or replacement sometime in that period. Importantly, the guitar remains structurally intact with no cracks, breaks, or repairs—a rare and desirable trait for a vintage instrument.
The original Kluson tuners are still present and functional, maintaining tuning stability and vintage correctness. The serial number, or more accurately the FON (Factory Order Number) S9209 11, places its manufacture squarely in 1959, confirming its place at the end of the ES-225TD’s production run.
A modern case now protects the instrument, offering better protection than the often fragile vintage cases, though it does not detract from the guitar’s collectibility or value.
This 1959 Gibson ES-225TD is a fine example of a late-'50s Gibson hollowbody: stylish, resonant, and historically significant. With only minor changes and in very good condition, it offers players and collectors alike a chance to own a piece of Gibson's rich legacy—beautifully preserved and ready to play.
