A Brief History of the ES-125 Series
The Gibson ES-125 was first introduced in 1941 as the successor to the ES-100, serving as an entry-level electric archtop guitar. The original model featured a single P-90 pickup in the neck position, along with a volume and tone control. These early models were built with a smaller 14.5" body, but production was short-lived due to World War II and ceased in 1942.
Gibson revived the ES-125 in 1946 with significant changes, most notably a larger 16.25" wide body—matching the dimensions of the ES-150. It featured a rosewood fingerboard initially adorned with trapezoid inlays, which later transitioned to simpler dot inlays.
In 1956, Gibson introduced a new variation: the ES-125T ("T" for thinline). This model retained the essence of the original ES-125 but with a thinner, more comfortable body. Over time, the ES-125 series expanded to include models with double P-90 pickups and sharp Florentine cutaways, giving players more options for tone and playability. Both the thinline and full-depth versions remained in production until they were phased out in the early 1970s.
