This 1958 Fender Stratocaster is a remarkable example of the craftsmanship and tone that defined Fender's golden era. Finished in its original translucent blonde nitro lacquer, this guitar showcases the natural ash body beneath—an important hallmark of these early blonde Strats. Unlike the solid-color finishes applied to alder bodies in later years, Fender's blonde finishes were reserved exclusively for ash, offering both aesthetic beauty and a unique tonal response: bright, snappy, and resonant.
Before the official custom color chart was introduced in 1961, blonde was the only finish offered by Fender on top of the standard sunburst, aside from rare, one-off customer orders. This guitar also features the original single-ply pickguard, correct for this year and soon replaced by a three-ply version in 1959. Notably, 1958 marks the final full production year of the one-piece maple fretboard, which would be superseded by the slab rosewood board starting in mid-1959.
The finish on this instrument is original on both the body (nail holes clearly visible) and the neck, with honest play wear throughout, including an area of removed paint on the back. This was done a long time ago by a previous owner with absolutely no touch up or respray. These marks tell the story of an instrument that has been played and loved but never abused.
The electronics are all correct and original. The original black-bottom pickups remain intact and deliver classic late-’50s Stratocaster tone—clear and glassy in the neck, balanced and punchy in the middle, and biting but musical in the bridge. The pots are Stackpole dated to the 25th week of 1958 (304825), consistent with the body date of April ’58 and the neck date of August ’58. The serial number (026055) places it firmly within Fender’s mid-to-late 1958 production range.
There are a few minor changes worth noting. The headstock logo has been redone, though tastefully. The tuner holes had previously been enlarged, but they’ve been neatly repaired and fitted with the original Kluson tuners, which are still functioning well. A second string tree had also been installed at one time but has since been removed, with the hole discreetly filled. The frets are original and show wear from decades of use, but the guitar remains playable. Whether you choose to refret or preserve is up to you.
Other original parts include the tremolo arm, bridge cover, and the original Fender tweed case, all of which add to the guitar’s historical value and completeness. The pickup rubber spacers have been replaced, but the original parts are included in the sale.
This Stratocaster has been with the same owner for over 20 years and has been cared for with respect and a light touch. It’s a soulful, resonant instrument with all the right details: blonde ash body, black-bottom pickups, original nitro finish, and the unmistakable feel of late-'50s Fender.
If you’re seeking a real-deal vintage Strat with authenticity, character, this is a rare opportunity.
