Martin's 0 size traces back to the 1850s and is one of the oldest shapes in the company's catalogue. Style 18 moved from rosewood to mahogany back and sides around 1917, and in 1934 the 0-18 was reworked around the 14-fret neck that became the modern standard, giving it the proportions this guitar still has. Through the 1950s Martin's production was dominated by dreadnoughts, so small-bodied 18-style guitars were built in comparatively modest numbers — Martin's own records show 600 0-18s produced in 1957. They became the quiet favourites of fingerstyle players, blues guitarists and singer-songwriters who wanted touch sensitivity and clarity rather than sheer bulk.
Solid Sitka spruce top over solid mahogany back and sides, mahogany neck. The top carries Martin's post-1944 straight-tapered X bracing, and the neck the steel T-bar reinforcement adopted in 1934. Short 24.9" scale, 14 frets clear of the body, roughly 1 11/16" at the nut, 13 1/2" across the lower bout, tortoise-pattern celluloid binding, single-ring rosette, nitrocellulose finish.
