Few instruments occupy such an important place in music history as the Fender Precision Bass. Introduced in 1951 by Leo Fender, the Precision Bass revolutionized modern music by becoming the world's first commercially successful solid-body electric bass. By 1955, the model had evolved into one of the most desirable early-production versions, representing Fender's pioneering years and the foundation upon which countless recordings were built.

This 1955 Fender Precision Bass is a remarkably authentic example, retaining its original electronics and original hardware throughout. Included are the highly sought-after original chrome pickup and bridge covers, accessories that were often discarded by working musicians and are increasingly difficult to find with surviving instruments.

The bass underwent a refret approximately twenty years ago, ensuring excellent playability while preserving its vintage character. During the refret process, the fingerboard varnish was redone but has aged during two decades of use.

Accompanying the bass is a genuine Fender hard case from the 1980s. While not period-correct to the instrument, it provides excellent protection and has become a collectible piece in its own right.

Model History

The 1955 Precision Bass represents the final years of Fender's original single-coil era before the major redesign of 1957. These mid-1950s instruments feature the contoured body, maple neck construction, sunburst finish, white pickguard and powerful single-coil pickup that helped define the sound of early rock 'n' roll, country, rhythm & blues, and the emerging popular music landscape of the era.

Compared to later split-coil Precision Bass models, the 1955 version delivers a distinctive voice—articulate, woody, and exceptionally responsive.

Rarity and Collectibility

Original mid-1950s Precision Basses have become increasingly scarce. Many examples were heavily modified during their working lives, often receiving replacement pickups, refinished bodies, changed hardware, or neck alterations. Instruments that retain their original electronics and hardware are considerably harder to find, particularly those still accompanied by original chrome covers.
