This 1952 Gibson Century lap steel is a rare and stylish piece of vintage electric guitar history, known for its striking design and rich tone. Finished in a bold blue-green lacquer that has aged beautifully over time, this guitar reflects the sleek, futuristic aesthetic Gibson was exploring in the postwar era.
Originally introduced in the late 1940s, the Century model was Gibson’s attempt to break away from traditional looks and move toward something more modern and eye-catching. This particular version, released in mid-1951, continued that design direction with a cool asymmetrical body made of solid maple and a clear Lucite fingerboard, reverse-painted underneath to give it a vibrant, space-age look. These details weren’t just cosmetic—they were part of a larger effort to bring innovation to guitar design, led by the design firm Barnes & Reinecke, who were hired by Gibson to refresh their visual style after World War II.
One of the standout features of this lap steel is its original P-90 single-coil pickup, a favorite among guitarists for its warm, full-bodied tone and great response. The electronics include one volume knob and two tone knobs—though the second tone control has only a slight tonal effect.
The original amber knobs used here are the higher-end version Gibson installed between 1949 and 1953, adding even more period-correct charm.
Unlike the earliest Century models that featured a metal fingerboard and a "Century" model name on the front, this version (produced after early 1952) has the updated plastic board and no model name. This change helped define the second generation of Century lap steels. Also of note: this guitar has no serial number, which is consistent with Gibson’s production methods at the time, as they only began using ink stamp serials in late 1953.
Only 225 of these instruments were produced in 1952, making it a very rare find. This example includes its original brown GEIB hardshell case with pink plush interior, which adds a nice touch of vintage authenticity.
Condition:
Overall, this guitar is in very good condition. The finish has aged to a slightly greenish hue due to years of sunlight, and there are some minor chips and small dings, but no major damage.
The tuners were replaced with later “one-line” Kluson-style units. The pots are original IRCs, dated to the 48th week of 1950, and everything functions as it should.
This is a fantastic, great-sounding vintage lap steel with loads of character and classic Gibson tone.
