This stunning 1967 Fender Precision Bass showcases the highly sought-after Teal Green Metallic finish, an exceptionally rare custom color that sets it apart from most vintage instruments. With its original paint, this bass retains its authenticity and vintage charm, making it a true gem for collectors and musicians alike.
Custom colors on Precision Basses from this era are a rare find, as they were less common than on high-end models like the Jazz Bass. When these custom finishes are encountered, they are often in more popular shades such as Lake Placid Blue or Candy Apple Red, which were among Fender’s frequently applied colors. However, coming across a Precision Bass in Teal Green Metallic—a finish used between 1965 and 1969—is significantly rarer. Other elusive finishes from this period include Blue Ice Metallic (1965–1969) and Ocean Turquoise (1965–1971), making this bass a standout example of Fender’s rich history.
The original finish on this instrument has been skillfully restored to remove the yellowed top layer of varnish. This careful restoration work reveals the true vibrancy of the Teal Green Metallic color, bringing it back to its original brilliance, reminiscent of how it looked fresh from the Fender factory. While the restoration isn’t flawless upon close inspection, it has undeniably succeeded in reviving the finish’s stunning appeal. As is common with Fender instruments from 1966–1967, the paint is factory-applied over a sunburst finish, adding another layer of historical significance.
The neck is stamped "5JAN67B" and features a rare padouk fretboard, a specification that Fender primarily used from mid-1965 but occasionally carried into 1967. The bass’s vintage pedigree is further affirmed by its components, including Stackpole pots dated to 1966 (with redone soldering) and a gray-bottom pickup stamped "May 1967." Although the original pickguard has a minor crack near the jack connection, it remains complete and functional, preserving the instrument’s originality.
This bass retains its original reverse "no-name" Kluson tuners, which were standard on Fender Precision and Jazz basses until 1968, when the design transitioned to "F" style tuning gears. Some paddle tuners were also used during this transitional period in 1967 but not on Precision before 1968. While the original case was lost long ago, the bass now comes with a period-correct mid-1970s Fender hard case.
Recently set up, this instrument plays beautifully, offering a rich, boomy, and woody resonance that lives up to Fender’s legendary craftsmanship from this golden era. With a professional refret ensuring optimal playability, this exceptional piece is ready to be enjoyed by its next owner.
